He makes use of the Mail Carrier often, who acts as his messenger. His physical influence does not appear to reach outside of the library's confines, though he may project himself spectrally into other levels on occasion. The Storyteller is not believed to be capable of physically leaving the library, and has never been observed to do so. Few have gazed upon the Storyteller's true arcane form, though it is without a doubt that it is entirely inhuman. In other cases, the Storyteller may take the appearance of an archetype the wanderer finds admirable, such as a mage or even a holy maiden. Accounts suggest that the Storyteller may read the wanderer's mind to mimic a loved one, to lull them into a sense of security. The Storyteller has a tendency to present itself in a form that its victim will find comforting. ![]() This makes the Storyteller one of the most powerful entities in the Backrooms, though of course, this information may be inaccurate - conflicting information sometimes crops up in reports, such as reports of omniscience contrasting with reports of reliance on books for information. Psychological manipulation is its forte, alongside a host of supernatural abilities: illusion, shapeshifting, telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation are all common reports. The Storyteller is crafty and cunning, and his methods are deceptive and sly. This makes exploration of the library extremely difficult, as maps become outdated almost as soon as they are created. The Storyteller manages the state of the library feverishly, constantly shifting its layout in an erratic pattern. ![]() Though broad details are often retained, including aspects of his appearance and abilities, information learned directly from him is rendered irretrievable upon exiting his library.ĭue to his abilities, one must doubt any information read about the Storyteller he may have edited it himself. Wanderers are consistently unable to recall concrete details of their interactions with the Storyteller, presumably due to him censoring their minds. Witnesses have described the Storyteller's abilities as "bringing fiction to reality" - manipulating knowledge, memory, and perception to create a starkly real experience based on fictional events from books. He is a master of illusion, capable of re-writing his local reality to an impressive degree this is done primarily through the media of the library. The Storyteller is able to manipulate any form of information, from books to human memories. As he is the library's curator and librarian, he is believed to be the source of the library's chaos.
